Former Indian captain Anjum Chopra’s statement came before the start of WPL 2023, expressed displeasure about the teams

Mumbai Former India skipper Anjum Chopra expressed dismay over giving mostly foreign players the responsibility of leading the team in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), saying capable Indian players should have been given the responsibility. Anjum said in an online media session, “I did not like that most of the teams have chosen foreign players as captains. It is an Indian league and will be played in Indian conditions. In such a situation, if Indian players have the ability, then they should have been captains.

Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore have captained Indian players in the form of Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana respectively while the other team has relied on Australian players for leadership. In this, Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals), Beth Mooney (Gujarat Giants) and Alyssa Healy (UP Warriors) will be in the role of captain. Anjum said, “I believe that Deepti Sharma (UP Warriors) should have been made the captain. She led the team in the Women’s T20 Challenge. Anjum, however, agreed that six-time T20 World Cup winners Australia have more experienced players than the Indians. He said, “Australian players are world champions and they have experience of leading teams in their country. I completely agree with her (Australian player) experience (at the international level). That’s why Jemima Rodrigues cannot be made captain while Meg Lanning is there. If the big picture is seen in this matter, then Indian players do not have the ability of captaincy like Australian players.

He said, “It will always be challenging for the Indian players because you are playing a franchise based tournament in India. Anjum said it would be a good opportunity for the domestic players to play with the legends of the game. He said, “The bigger picture I am seeing from this league is about the under-19 players. These players will win the Under-19 World Cup and play franchise cricket, where they will get a chance to rub shoulders with players like Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney and Harmanpreet Kaur.

This former batsman said, “It will be a big thing for him. We have to see how Indian domestic players perform, we know foreign players, but we don’t know much about Indian domestic players. Anjum believes that WPL will bring a big change in Indian women’s cricket. He said, “It was long awaited but finally the league has started. It’s not about preparing to beat Australia. It is about becoming a better cricketer.
