Mumbai trusts Archer in Bumrah’s absence; eyes on title leaving behind last season’s failure

With Jasprit Bumrah injured due to injury, Mumbai Indians will be hoping that Jofra Archer continues to be in his fine form to help the record five-time champions put behind last season’s dismal performance to lay a strong claim to the title. The Mumbai Indians team finished 2022 at the last position with four wins in 14 matches. The team finished last for the first time in 15 seasons of the IPL. Mumbai’s poor performance coincided with their captain’s worst season ever.

This was the first time in the history of IPL that Rohit did not score a single fifty in the season. He could only score 268 runs at an average of 19.14 during this period. Although Bumrah showed some sparkle with his skills by taking 15 wickets in 14 matches, he will not be able to play in IPL 2023 after a back surgery. Although the team will get some strength in the bowling with the arrival of Joffra Archer, but it will not be easy to fill the gap of Bumrah. The team also lacks experienced spinners.

Veteran Piyush Chawla has been included in the squad by the franchise but he played his last IPL match two years back for Chennai Super Kings. Strength: World number one T20 International batsman Suryakumar Yadav would be looking to bounce back strongly after a poor ODI series against Australia. He is also the most dependable name in the team’s middle order, which includes India’s Tilak Verma and South Africa’s Dewald Brewis and Tristan Stubbs.

Rohit will attack from the first ball in the top order along with explosive Ishan Kishan. Tim David will be expected to bat in the lower order. The team spent Rs 17.50 crore for Cameron Green in the auction earlier this year. He will make up for the lack of Kieron Pollard in the team. Pollard has become the batting coach of the team. In bowling, the team will depend on Archer and left-arm fast bowler Jason Behrendorff.

Behrendorff played a key role in making Perth Scorchers champions in the Big Bash League, taking 21 wickets in 14 matches. Weakness: Captain Rohit has been scoring runs of late but has not been able to convert good starts into big innings. The biggest challenge for the team will be to find the right combination. It will not be easy to make up for Bumrah’s absence. Spin bowling is also the weak link of the team. Opportunity: The team would like to take full advantage of their home ground.

Last season, the team had won two out of four matches here. There is a lot of young players in the team, so they have a good future. Young talents like Brewis, Verma, Stubbs, David and even Green will have to go all out to prove themselves. Threat: Suryakumar Yadav has been out of touch in the ODIs but would like to put that behind him and make a comeback in the T20 format. Rohit and Ishan will look to strike from ball one when the team begins its campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru on April 2. David and Brewish will try to increase the run rate in the middle and end overs.
