Netherlands beat UAE by three wickets in thrilling match

The Netherlands registered a three-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their Group A first round match of the ICC T20 World Cup here on Sunday. Batting first, the UAE team could score only 111 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. In response, the Netherlands too lost six wickets for 76 runs in the 14th over and were in danger of losing. Scott Edwards (16 not out), Tim Pringle (15) and Logan Van Beek (04 not out), however, ensured a win for the Netherlands.

Edwards and Van Beek scored 112 for seven in the fifth ball of the final over from fast bowler Jawar Farid to help the team win. Pakistan-born Junaid Siddiqui (3/24 in four overs) brought UAE back when he dismissed Tom Cooper (08) and former South African-born IPL player Roolof van der Merwe in three balls. Former New Zealand fast bowler Chris’s sons Pringle and Edwards added 27 runs in five overs to take the Netherlands team closer to victory.

During the partnership of the seventh wicket, both of them did not hit any boundaries but took another two runs to put the team in a strong position. Before this, the UAE team has never looked in a position to score big. The team could not increase the run rate. Mohammad Wasim was the team’s top scorer with 41 runs in 47 balls. The dominance of the Netherlands bowlers can be seen from the fact that UAE batsmen played more than 60 balls free. Tim’s son and fast bowler Bas de Leede, who played for the Netherlands in the 1996 World Cup, took three wickets for 19 runs. Fred Klaasen (2 for 13) and Van der Merwe (one wicket for 19) also played a good role in his side.
