New rules of IPL: Captain can choose the playing XI after the toss

Captains of Indian Premier League (IPL) teams can now choose the playing XI after the toss instead of giving a ‘list of players’ before the toss, as per the new playing rules issued by the BCCI. According to Article 1.2.1 of the Playing Conditions, “Each captain shall give in writing to the IPL Match Referee the names of his last 11 players and a maximum of five substitute fielders after the toss. ,

According to it, “As per Article 1.2.9 no member (member of the playing XI) can be changed after he has been selected and before the start of the game without the consent of the opposing captain. This means that after the toss, if any captain feels that he needs to change his playing XI according to the situation, then he is free to do so till the start of the match. Another change to the rules is the penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct of the wicket-keeper if he changes his position before the batsman has played the ball.

In case of unfair action by the wicket-keeper, the umpire may declare it a ‘dead’ ball and inform the other umpire of the reasons for doing so. The umpire at the bowler’s end will then have to award a penalty of one run for a “wide or no ball” and can also award five penalty runs to the batting team if he so chooses. The umpire shall inform the captain of the fielding team of the reason for his action. He shall inform the batsmen and the captain of the batting team as soon as possible. ,The tournament committee has already announced ‘Impact Substitutions’ in which a new player can be replaced during a match from five designated substitutes.
