Nigeria enters FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup semi-final for the first time by defeating America

Nigeria on Friday became the second country in Africa to qualify for the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup semi-finals after beating the United States 4-3 in a penalty shootout here. Both the teams were tied 1-1 in regular time in the quarterfinal match at the DY Patil Stadium which was delayed by two hours due to bad weather. The match was to start at 4.30 pm but it started at 6.20 pm.

In regular time, Nigeria’s Omamuzo Idafe scored in the 27th minute and Amalia Villariel of America scored in the 40th minute. In the penalty shootout, Edidiong Itim, Idet Ofiyong, Miracle Usani and Omamuzo Idafe scored while Folorunsho missed. Emery Adams, Taylor Suarez and Mia Bhuta scored for America while Emery and Jackson missed. Ghana is the only African country to have made it to the semi-finals of the tournament in 2012.
