Now WFI elections will be held on August 7! The Supreme Court overturned the decision of the Gauhati High Court

The much-awaited Wrestling Federation of India elections will be held on August 7 after several postponements. Sources have given information about this. The WFI elections were earlier scheduled to be held on July 11, but were stayed by the Gauhati High Court following a petition by the Assam Wrestling Association (AWA) seeking the right to participate in the election process. The state association claimed that it was entitled to become an associate member of the WFI with voting rights, but the national federation refused to recognize it, despite a recommendation from its executive committee on 15 November 2014.

The road blockade was removed on Tuesday after the Supreme Court stayed an order of the Gauhati High Court. The WFI had fixed May 7 as the date for the election before it was suspended by the Sports Ministry. The Sports Ministry had ordered the WFI to suspend all its ongoing activities with immediate effect after the national body’s president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh decided to appoint a monitoring committee to probe allegations of sexual harassment of women wrestlers.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, after meeting the protesting wrestlers, had said that the WFI elections would be held by June 30. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had then announced that the elections would be held on July 4 but the returning officer had fixed July 6 as the new date. However, after five unaffiliated state bodies submitted claims for voting eligibility, the returning officer was forced to set July 11 as the new polling date, before it was further delayed.
