Shakeel’s century gives Pakistan lead over Sri Lanka

Saud Shakeel’s second Test century helped Pakistan take a first-innings lead at lunch on the third day of the first cricket Test against Sri Lanka. At lunch, left-handed batsman Shakeel was unbeaten on 119 as Pakistan reached 313 for six at the end of the rain-affected first session. Pakistan have a slight lead of one run. Shakeel, who made his Test debut in December last year, has scored two centuries and five half-centuries in six matches. Shakeel and Agha Salman (83) took control of the innings with a record 177-run partnership for the sixth wicket after Pakistan lost five wickets for 101 runs yesterday.

This is the highest partnership for the sixth wicket in Test cricket for Pakistan against Sri Lanka. The duo surpassed the 173-run partnership between Sarfaraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq in Dubai in 2017. Shakeel and Salman collect runs in quick succession. Both used their moves well against the Sri Lankan spinners and taught the bad balls a lesson. Shakeel was given a life for 93 in the first over of the day by Ramesh Mendis and then brought up his century three balls later.

Salman got stumped on the last ball of this over. He hit nine fours and a six in his 113-ball innings. At lunch, Noman Ali was supporting Shakeel by scoring 13 runs. Both have added 35 runs for the seventh wicket so far. Shakeel has so far hit 10 fours while facing 164 balls.
