Northeast to debut as IPL host

The Northeast will debut as hosts of the lucrative T20 league for the first time since the inception of the Indian Premier League when Rajasthan Royals host two ‘home’ matches next month. The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) Stadium is one of the ‘home’ venues for the Royals in the IPL starting on Friday and the team will take on Punjab Kings on April 5 and Delhi Capitals on April 8. ACA secretary Tridib Kanwar told PTI, “We were allotted two matches of Rajasthan Royals in 2020 as well but due to the outbreak of Kovid-19, these matches could not be held.” We are happy that this year two matches are scheduled to be held here.

He said that the preparations are going on in full swing and the ACA is in constant touch with the Rajasthan Royals team. Kanwar said, “We urge cricket lovers from Assam as well as the entire North East to come and watch the match. Online ticket booking has been started for Rajasthan Royals matches. The Jaipur-based franchise had earlier partnered with the association for a cricket academy which is now functional at the ACA Stadium. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Joint Secretary Devjit Sekia said that there are many aspiring cricketers who are unable to make it to the national team due to tough competition and IPL is a good opportunity for them. All eyes will be on local player Riyan Parag, playing for Rajasthan Royals, during the two matches in Guwahati.
