Objective of bringing Santosh Trophy to Saudi Arabia achieved: AIFF

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Saturday said it has achieved its objective of bringing the Santosh Trophy to Saudi Arabia but clarified that it is not necessary that the domestic tournament will be held there again next year. The semi-finals, third-place match and final of the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy are being played in Saudi Arabia for the first time in the tournament’s history.

The final matches of the tournament are being hosted by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation at the King Fahd International Stadium. AIFF General Secretary Shaji Prabhakaran said, “We wanted to present Santosh Trophy as one of our prestigious and flagship competitions. Our aim was to raise that level. Overall, on behalf of the AIFF, we have achieved the objective of bringing the Santosh Trophy abroad. ,

He said, “Who expected that Meghalaya and Karnataka would play the final. It is good because after so many years (54) a new champion will emerge. Prabhakaran said, “Now the pressure will be on us to raise similar expectations. Now it is up to us to maintain this level. In a way it is good for us. On whether the tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia in the next season as well, he said, “Our association with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation is not just limited to the Santosh Trophy, the agreement we signed includes many aspects of football.” Out of which getting the Santosh Trophy here was one.
