Sabalenka refuses to answer questions related to Ukraine war at French Open

Paris. Arina Sabalenka, the second-seeded Belarusian tennis player at the French Open, refused to answer questions about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after winning the match on Wednesday. After winning the first round on Sunday, Sabalenka said that no player from Russia or Belarus supports the war. He was, however, asked on Wednesday to personally condemn Belarus’ role in supporting Russia’s attack. “I have no reaction to you,” Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, told a news conference after her 7-5, 6-2 win over Irina Shimanovich in the second round of the French Open Grand Slam tournament.

Sabalenka’s first-round opponent, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, urged reporters to ask the 25-year-old whether she personally supported or opposed the war. Sabalenka was asked whether she supports Belarus’ leader Alexander Lukashenko. “I don’t have an answer for you, so thank you for your question,” he said. The next question was about Belarus’ role in the war.

When the third question was asked, the organizers intervened and Sabalenka said, “You’ve had enough answers from me.” Kostyuk refused to shake Sabalenka’s hand after their first round match on Sunday. After that match, Sabalenka said, “No player from Russia or Belarus in this world supports war.” None. How can we support war? No one – normal people – would ever support this.
