India will soon bring e-passport with microchip, know the difference between the two
New Delhi: The government has announced its intention to provide e-passports to all residents using technology and digital processes. Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Sanjay Bhattacharya said in a tweet that Indian citizens are likely to get e-passports soon. The Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, stressed on the importance of expediting the rollout of e-passports, saying that they would be secure with biometric data and would, among other things, allow faster entry through immigration offices across the world. Presently passports of Indian people are printed on booklets. On an experimental basis, India issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports with implanted electronic microprocessor chip. According to the administration, the decision was taken to make passport fraud more difficult and help people get through immigration more quickly. There are 555 Passport Kendras in India, of which 36 are Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), and 426 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). ( E-passport )

The e-passport will be ICAO compliant
According to Bhattacharya’s tweet, the new e-passports will be based on secure biometric data and ensure easy immigration across the world. This is part of the government’s effort to tackle fraud and at the same time ease the immigration process. The e-passport will be ICAO compliant. The government has allowed Indian Security Press (ISP) Nashik to procure electronic contactless inlays for production of e-passports. Government Press Security is a division of the Printing and Mint Corporation. India Limited (SPMCIL), a state-owned company in India. In this context, ISP Nashik has been permitted to float a global tender for procurement of ICAO-compliant electronic contactless inlays and their operating systems, which are required for production.

E-passports were first introduced in 2017. India has since given 20,000 official and diplomatic passports on a trial basis. There is a chip in every passport. In addition, the country intends to implement a fully digital passport that can be saved on a smartphone. PM Narendra Modi had said in 2019 that efforts are being made to issue chip-based e-passports to Indian people through a centralized system. All our embassies and consulates across the world are associated with the Passport Seva Project. The government selected Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for the second phase of the Passport Seva programme. TCS transformed the passport sector into a digital one, providing online services and setting global benchmarks for timeliness and dependability, thanks to this program, which started in 2008. TCS will introduce new capabilities to facilitate issuance of e-passports in this entire phase. ( E-passport )
