Pakistan-born fast bowler Irfan troubled Smith, Kohli and Rohit in net session

Mohammad Irfan (Jr), who has represented Pakistan ‘A’ team, looked disheartened at not being able to click a selfie with Virat Kohli at the Sydney Cricket Ground here after the Indian team’s net session. The six feet six inches tall fast bowler told PTI after the Indian team’s net session, “Virat Kohli gone? Took a selfie with Rohit bhai, it would have been better if Kohli had got one.” The Pakistan-born pacer has made Sydney his home for the past three years.

He was the highlight of the net session ahead of the Indian team’s T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands. Irfan, who bowls differently, bowls with the same action as former Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir. Tanveer was a left-arm bowler while Irfan is a right-arm bowler. Due to his stature, this 27-year-old bowler gets good bounce even from the ‘good length’ of the pitch. He troubled Dinesh Karthik with the bounce he got from his balls in the Indian team’s net session. Indian captain Rohit and veteran Kohli have praised his bowling.

Irfan said, “I hit the ball around ‘good length’. I trouble all kinds of batsmen because of my stature. When Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli praise you, what more do you need. Rohit bhai wished me all the best for the future.” Irfan told that during the net session he had troubled Steve Smith a lot. “I got Smith out twice during the net session for the Australian team. He was not in good form so he asked me to keep the ball away from the wicket so that he could find the rhythm.

Irfan plays grade cricket for the Western Suburbs district of New South Wales, and is looking forward to his PR (permanent residency) which will ease his path to first-class cricket (Sheffield Shield) in Australia. Irfan said, “It is a good experience, but let me tell you that I have played 22 first-class matches for Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and three seasons of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

I have played in three seasons of the Pakistan Super League for Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators. The bowler said, “When I stopped getting opportunities in the PSL, I came to Australia. Obviously I dreamed of playing for Pakistan. I have played with Babar Azam for Pakistan ‘A’.
