Panic from Corona! Border reopening in Australia for fear of new Kovid variant Omicron

Sydney: Australia abruptly halted plans to reopen its international borders to skilled workers and students on Monday. The decision was taken at the eleventh hour, inspired by concerns over the new variant Omron version of Kovid-19. After an emergency security meeting, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the reopening on December 1 would be delayed by at least two weeks. Australia’s borders have been closed to most non-citizens for more than 20 months, causing labor shortages and crippling the vital tourism industry. ( border restrictions in australia)

Time to open the border from December 1

Morrison called the delay a necessary and temporary decision based on medical advice. Australia has detected five cases of the Omicron variant so far. The temporary pause will ensure that Australia can gather the information needed to better understand the Omicron variant. Morrison cited new concerns about the vaccine’s efficacy, the extent of the disease, including the extent to which it may cause more mild symptoms, and the level of transmission. The plan to open the border for those coming from Japan and South Korea on December 1 is also now in cold storage.

Re-ban on the movement of workers (border restrictions in australia)

Thanks to a slow vaccine rollout, Australia has faced some of the toughest and longest-lasting restrictions in the world during the pandemic. The Conservative government had opened the border to Australians, permanent residents and Singaporeans, but not to the estimated 1.4 million skilled workers living in the country, who were barred from re-entering when they left. Monday’s delay will also cause concern in the country’s worst-affected education sector. According to University Australia, an industry group, 130,000 international students live outside the country.
