Pathirana should stay away from Test cricket: Dhoni

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday termed young fast bowler Mathish Pathirana as a great talent for Sri Lankan cricket and said that he should stay away from Test cricket. He took three wickets for 15 runs in four overs against the Indians and was adjudged man of the match. Dhoni said at the post-match award ceremony that bowlers with a ‘sling’ action are more prone to injury. He cautioned Pathirana and the Sri Lankan cricket administrators against playing him in all formats of the game.

Dhoni said, “Bowlers whose action is complicated, it is difficult for batsmen to read his balls. Talking about Pathirana, his consistency and pace make him special. “He said,” I think he should not play Test cricket, should not even think about it. He can only play ICC tournaments. He is young and he will prove to be very important for Sri Lankan cricket. Last time he came here, he was very lean but now he has become a bit stronger. Dhoni won the toss and decided to bowl first. He, however, revealed that he wanted to bat first, but there were few people who agreed with his opinion in the team meeting.

He said, “I was confused about the decision of the toss, I wanted to bat first but the team decided to bowl first keeping in mind the possibility of rain. If there is any confusion, we sit and talk about it. I thought the wicket would slow down and that was the reason behind it, and even if rain had come, most of the match would have been over. Dhoni said that this win is important for the team as it will give them some relief. Invited to bat first in the match, Mumbai Indians scored 139 runs for eight wickets. Chennai Super Kings made 140 in 17.4 overs to win the match.

When Mumbai captain Rohit was asked the reason for the team’s defeat, he said, “We made mistakes in every department. We didn’t bat well, didn’t get enough runs on the score board to give the bowlers a chance to take the match out. It was a bad day with the bat for us. Asked about coming in to bat at number three instead of opening the innings, he said, “We did what felt comfortable to us. With Tilak Verma not in the team, we wanted the Indian batsmen to stay at the crease in the middle overs against spin but it could not happen as we lost three wickets for 16 runs.
