Chappell said Warner exposed Cricket Australia’s tendency to only defend itself

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell believes that Cricket Australia never protected the interests of its players and David Warner exposed the tendency of the officials to defend themselves by reacting strongly to his captaincy ban. Warner on Wednesday withdrew his appeal to lift the life ban on his captaincy. He said the review panel wanted to spare him public embarrassment and did not want his family to become a ‘washing machine for cricket’s dirty laundry’.

Some former players including Michael Clarke supported Warner and now Chappell’s name has also been added to this episode. Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo, “I did not like it when David Warner took a dig at Cricket Australia for deciding to withdraw the request to review his captaincy ban.” This shows that David Warner did not trust the authorities with his best interests. It was a wise decision by Warner as Cricket Australia only looks after its own interests and not those of the players.

Chappell said, “The young players should express their gratitude to Warner as he exposed Cricket Australia’s tendency to only defend themselves.” He should keep this in mind in the future. “Cricketer-turned-commentator Chappell said,” Most importantly, withdrawing Warner’s review shows how wrong the decision of life ban imposed on him for captaincy is. The then Australian captain Steve Smith and vice-captain Warner were suspended for a year for their involvement in ball-tampering against South Africa in 2018.

While Smith was banned from captaincy for only two years, Warner was banned for life in this case. Chappell believes that the same ban should have been imposed on Smith and Warner regarding the captaincy. In his view, Smith’s offense was bigger than Warner’s as he was then leading the team.
