Djokovic won 10th Australian Open and 22nd Grand Slam title

Serbian star Novak Djokovic won his 10th Australian Open Championship and a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam title with a 6-3 7-6(4) 7-6(5) win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the men’s singles final at the Rod Laver Arena here on Sunday night. . He then lay down on his back after celebrating with his team and had tears in his eyes. Djokovic played very well at some crucial moments during the match and this win will see him return to the top of the ATP rankings.

Now his winning streak in Melbourne has become 28 matches, which is the most matches in the Open era since 1968. A year ago, he missed the Australian Open as he was deported from the country for not getting vaccinated for COVID-19. But since then the government’s restrictions have eased and the 35-year-old got a visa this time despite not getting vaccinated. Djokovic already had the record of winning nine Australian Open trophies to which he added one more title.

His 22 major championships include seven Wimbledons, three US Opens (he missed last year due to not getting the coronavirus vaccination) and two French Opens. He is now tied with Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history with 22. Only two female players, Margaret Court (24 titles) and Serena Williams (23 titles), are ahead of them in terms of winning the most Grand Slam trophies. It was also Djokovic’s 93rd title on the ATP Tour. He looked excellent throughout the match but was the best in the two tiebreakers.

He didn’t have much trouble with Tsitsipas. The win would move him from fifth to first in the ATP rankings, a position he had held for more weeks than any other player. Djokovic took a 4–1 lead in the first set and won the last three points when he was tied at 4–4. He was leading 5–0 in the final tiebreaker and when it was over he jumped into the stands and started jumping with his coach Goran Ivanisevic and other members of his team.

Then he returned to the court and sat on the bench, hiding his face in a white towel and letting the tears flow. “I would say it’s probably the biggest win of my life,” he said after winning the title at Melbourne Park on his return from the last time he didn’t play here. After playing his 33rd Major final, Djokovic said, “I would say it will be one of the most challenging tournaments of my life given the conditions.” Not playing last year and coming back this year. Tsitsipas was playing in his second final.

The 24-year-old Greek player also lost to Djokovic in the 2021 French Open. Djokovic’s coach said, “It is an emotional moment for all of us. I am very emotional for him. This is a wonderful achievement. These three weeks were very difficult for him but he was able to overcome it all. Tsitsipas told Djokovic, “I would like to thank you for bringing our sport to where it is now.”
