Raveena wins gold on final day, India ends campaign with 11 medals

Defending Asian champion Raveena produced a strong performance to win gold in the 63kg final as India ended their campaign with 11 medals at the Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain. Raveena made an impressive comeback in the final against Megan Decler of the Netherlands, using her technical ability and quick pace to the full. The hard-fought contest ended in favor of Asian Youth 2022 gold medalist Raveena.

After review of the match, Raveena won 4-3. In another final, Keerthy (81+kg) went down 0-5 to 2022 European Youth Champion Cleona Elizabeth Darcy of Ireland. Due to this defeat, the Indian boxer had to be satisfied with the silver medal. India dominated this championship. The 25-member Indian contingent won a total of 11 medals, including four gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

Altogether 17 Indians had qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament which is more than any other country in the 2022 edition. Indian women boxers led the way in this year’s edition of the championship with a total of eight medals. They are followed by Kazakhstan (5) and Uzbekistan (4). In the men’s section, young Asian champion Vanshaj (63.5kg) and Vishwanath Suresh (48kg) won gold medals for India while Ashish (54kg) settled for silver.

Among women, Raveena (63kg) and Devika Ghorpade (52kg) won gold. Keerthi (+81kg), Bhavna Sharma (48kg) won silver medals while Muskaan (75kg), Lashu Yadav (70kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (60kg) and Tamanna (50kg) won bronze medals. Around 600 boxers from 73 countries participated in this year’s championship.
