Pele, battling cancer, thanks fans for their prayers

Brazilian football great Pele thanked sports fans around the world on Thursday who sent their well wishes to him after he was hospitalized in Sao Paulo for a battle with cancer. Pele’s ‘colon tumour’ was treated in September 2021. His daughter had said that he was admitted to a hospital here on Tuesday for its treatment. Since then, he has been receiving messages from around the world wishing him a speedy recovery, including a message from Brazil coach Tite from the Qatar World Cup.

In a post on his Instagram, Pele posted a photo of a building in Qatar with a get well soon message written on it. He wrote, “It is always good to receive such positive messages. Thank you Qatar for this message and also to all those who have sent me positive messages. Tite wished Pele a speedy recovery during a press conference before the team’s match against Cameroon on Friday. Pele’s daughter Kelly Nascimento said on Wednesday that there was no emergency regarding the health of her 82-year-old father.

He and his sister Flavia Nascimento posed for photos of several members of Pele’s family on Thursday. Spokesmen for Pele and Albert Einstein Hospital did not issue any daily statements regarding Pele’s health. ESPN Brasil reported on Wednesday that the three-time World Cup champion had been taken to the Albert Einstein Hospital due to “general swelling”. The hospital had said after removing his tumor that he would start ‘chemotherapy’. Pele played a key role in Brazil winning the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He has scored 77 goals in 92 matches for the national team. He is the top goalscorer for Brazil.
