Auckland. Former New Zealand spinner John Bracewell believes talismanic batsman Devon Conway has developed a ‘Kane Williamson addiction’ to keep learning from past mistakes and rapidly improve his batting technique. Conway, a late break into New Zealand’s squad at the age of 29, scored a double century on Test debut against England in 2021, becoming only the seventh batsman to do so in the longest format. Conway, now 31, played a key role in Chennai Super Kings’ title win in his second Indian Premier League season, scoring 672 runs at an average of over 51 with six half-centuries and a best score of 92 not out.

His first wicket partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad laid the foundation for the Super Kings’ record-equalling fifth IPL title. He finished third in the race for the Orange Cap after Shubman Gill and Faf Duplesey. “I think he’s an absolute wizard in terms of skill and adjustment across all three formats,” Bracewell, who has taken 102 wickets and scored over 1,000 runs in 41 Tests for New Zealand, told SEN Radio. “I like the way he is becoming a better cricketer all the time. He has caught Kane Williamson’s addiction to continuous learning. He is not the kind of person to sit back and depend on being talented. Conway has so far scored 1212 Tests, 508 ODIs and 632 T20 International runs.
