Right guidance is necessary for young players who are making headlines: Jhulan Goswami

Former India bowler Jhulan Goswami says guiding young players will be necessary in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), starting this year, as they can lose sight of their goals after grabbing headlines with quick success. Ahead of the inaugural season of the WPL, an auction of women players will be held in Mumbai on February 13. The league will provide young Indian players, including the U-19 World Cup winning team, an opportunity to play alongside the world’s top players.

A good performance will put the players in the limelight and they should have someone to help them avoid distractions. “When you are playing the World Cup and all of a sudden you get noticed, things will be different but it is important to have a mentor with you, be it a coach, a friend,” Jhulan said at a program on ‘Sportstar’ here. Or it could be parents. “The former fast bowler said,” Their role is very important. To make sure the players are fit on the field because they have got a lot of talent and all of a sudden they are getting all the limelight.

Jhulan, who retired from the game last year, will serve as the team mentor and bowling coach of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the WPL. “These young players will earn money at a young age after WPL. They need to be given the right direction, the right guidance. This is where the journey begins and we cannot lose the talent as we want them to become match winners for the country.
