Lucknow Supergiants move towards playoffs after defeating Mumbai by five runs

Pacer Mohsin Khan, making a comeback after a long time due to injury, bowled a brilliant last over to guide Lucknow Supergiants to a thrilling five-run win over Mumbai Indians in an IPL match, cementing their claim to the playoffs. Earlier, on the basis of Marcus Stoinis’ career-best unbeaten innings of 89 runs, Lucknow Super Giants recovered from a bad start and scored 177 runs for three wickets on a difficult pitch. In response, Mumbai started with a bang but the team could only manage 172 runs for five wickets in 20 overs.

Mohsin, who was ruled out of the home season due to a shoulder injury, did not allow Mumbai to score 11 runs in the last over. However, despite this defeat, Mumbai remains in the race for the playoffs. Captain Rohit Sharma (37 runs in 25 balls) and Ishan Kishan (59 runs in 39 balls) made a brilliant start for Mumbai, adding 90 runs in 58 balls for the first wicket. Ishaan was looking in fine form while Rohit also showed signs of returning to form. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, however, gave Mumbai a double whammy by sending both of them to the pavilion in two consecutive overs.

Suryakumar Yadav had to bear the brunt of playing high shots as soon as he came on this pitch. Fast bowler Yash Thakur sent him to the pavilion for seven runs. Mumbai needed 53 runs in the last five overs but Tim David could not win the way he did against Rajasthan Royals. Earlier, Stoinis hit eight sixes in his 47-ball innings for Lucknow and shared an 82-run partnership with stand-in captain Krunal Pandya (49 retired hurt). Earlier, Lucknow lost three wickets for 35 runs in the seventh over.

Lucknow took a controversial decision to drop Kyle Myers, their highest run-scorer this season, which also proved to be wrong. Deepak Hooda, who came in his place, was the victim of Jason Behrendorff after scoring five runs. Jason also sent Prerak Mankad to the pavilion on the next ball. Lucknow’s condition worsened with the dismissal of Quinton Dickock in the seventh over. He scored 16 runs in 15 balls. He caught Ishaan Kishan behind the wicket on Piyush Chawla’s googly. Since then Stoinis and Krunal took the lead.

Krunal retired in the 16th over due to discomfort. After this, Stoinis hit spinners Hrithik Shokin and Chawla for sixes in consecutive overs. It was difficult to play strokes on this pitch but Stoinis made full use of his power. Chris Jordan scored 24 runs in the 18th over which included two sixes and three fours. He ended the innings by hitting Akash Madhwal for a six. Mumbai bowlers gave away 54 runs in the last three overs.
