ACC may accept Pakistan Cricket Board’s ‘hybrid model’ for Asia Cup 2023

New Delhi. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) led by Jay Shah-led secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to host four Asia Cup matches in the absence of India in Pakistan while the remaining matches will be held in Sri Lanka’s Galle and Pallekele. There is a possibility of approving the ‘hybrid model’.

The ACC is expected to make a formal announcement in this regard on Tuesday and the official approval of the hybrid model will also pave the way for the Pakistan cricket team to come for the ODI World Cup to be held in India in October-November. Pakistan should have no problem playing in Ahmedabad now.

“Oman Cricket Board chief Pankaj Khimji, a member of the ACC executive board, was tasked with finding a solution as most countries did not want a hybrid model,” said an ACC board member who did not wish to be named. “But as of now, the four matches without India – Pakistan vs Nepal, Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh – will be held at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore,” he said. The two matches between India and Pakistan and all the remaining Super Four matches will be held in Pallekele or Galle.

The Asia Cup is expected to be held in September. It is learned that International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Geoff Allardyce and Chairman Greg Barclay went to Karachi to meet PCB Chairman Najam Sethi and it was decided that Pakistan will not put any conditions to go to the World Cup if the four matches of the Asia Cup are played by the country. Will be in as it has the right to host. Playing the tournament without Pakistan means that the broadcaster will pay only half of the committed amount for the tournament as there will be no scheduled two matches between India and Pakistan and a third match if both reach the final.

This solution seems to be the most practical as it would pave the way for Pakistan to go to India for the ODI World Cup without any conditions. The ODI World Cup schedule is expected to be released early next week. India may face Pakistan in the World Cup in Ahmedabad. The remaining matches of Pakistan can be held in Chennai and Hyderabad.
