Selection of volleyball teams: Supreme Court issues notice to Center

The Supreme Court has sought the response of the Center and others on an appeal challenging the Madras High Court order which said that the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) could have selected the state teams and sent them to the National Games in Gujarat . A bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Bela M Trivedi issued notice to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, VFI and others seeking their response. “Issue notice, can be returned in six weeks,” the bench said.

National Games were organized in Gujarat from 29 September to 12 October. The Supreme Court was hearing a plea by the Tamil Nadu State Volleyball Association (TNSVA) challenging the October 7, 2022 order of the Madras High Court, which had said that the VFI should select teams from the states and send them to Gujarat for the National Games. While the state association cannot nominate the team independently.

Setting aside a single judge’s order allowing TNSVA to select men’s and women’s teams and send them to the National Games, the High Court had observed that the VFI is the apex body in the country representing the sport. TNSVA is affiliated to VFI and is also recognized by Tamil Nadu State Olympic Association and Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had made it clear that it would only work with the VFI and the Tamil Nadu State Olympic Association made it clear in a letter to the TNSVA on August 31.
