Seven Indians assured of medals in World Youth Boxing Championships

Reigning youth Asian champion Raveena, Vishwanath Suresh and Vanshaj were among seven Indian players to assure themselves of medals by advancing to the semi-finals of the World Youth Men’s and Women’s World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain. Other Indian players who made it to the last four are Bhawna Sharma (48kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (60kg), Lashu Yadav (70kg) and Ashish (54kg). Continuing their stupendous run in the prestigious tournament, India’s four women players won their quarter-finals by identical 5-0 margins.

While Raveena defeated Romania’s Alexandra Cretu in the 63kg bout, Bhavna defeated Venezuela’s Avimir Brito, Kunjarani defeated Kazakhstan’s Egerim Kabdolda and Lashu defeated Mexico’s Zujet Hernandez. Grivia Devi Huidrome (54kg) was the only Indian woman to lose. She was defeated 5-0 by Kazakhstan’s Elena Bazarova. Meanwhile, it was a day of mixed success for the Indian men.

Three out of five Indian male boxers made it to the semi-finals. Vishwanath (48kg) and Vanshaj (63.5kg) registered unanimous decision wins over Australia’s Jay Kerr and Kyrgyzstan’s Umar Livza, respectively. Ashish defeated Aaron Cullen of Scotland 4-3. The bout was reviewed after which the verdict was given in favor of the Indian boxer. Among the Indian men’s boxers, Deepak (75kg) and Mohit (86kg) failed to progress beyond the quarterfinals. The semi-finals will be held on Wednesday while the finals will be held on Friday and Saturday.
