Shane Warne is still alive in every corner of Melbourne

Nine months have passed since the death of Shane Warne but the memories of this legendary leg-spinner are still alive everywhere from the streets of Melbourne to the beach and the cricket ground. Cricket’s biggest entertainer, Warne, is a lively presence everywhere in Melbourne’s spirit, enthusiasm and celebration. Be it the grounds of St Kilda Cricket Club where he learned cricket and the art of leg spin or the beach in Brighton where he used to sunbathe. Shane Warne died in Thailand at the age of 53 but he will live on in the memories of Melbourne.

There is a man-sized statue outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in which he is seen doing leg-spin. A fan has painted a mural on the wall of his home in Dalgaty Lane as a tribute to Warne. And no wonder it is slowly becoming a tourist destination. But to understand Warne, it is necessary to visit St Kilda Cricket Club in South Melbourne where he learned the art of leg spin.

Young Warne used to be a hero in Melbourne’s grade cricket. Warne’s brother Jason recalled the old memories, saying, “We played with each other in childhood, from cricket to all other games. He always tried to spin the ball as much as possible. He continued to do this in his teens. He was a natural player and he did well in every game.” When Jason was talking about his brother, the pain of losing his brother was clearly visible on his face.

He said, “Anyone who has lost a member of their family can understand the pain.” Jason worked as his brother’s business manager and after Warne’s death he spent months at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. But did not step where his brother had given many memorable performances. “I actually went to the MCG last week to attend his memorial. This was the first time that the Australian team was playing a match in front of the Shane Warne stand. It was a very emotional moment indeed.
