Sindhu, Srikanth win at Madrid Masters

Star Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth won their first-round matches at the Madrid Masters badminton tournament here on Wednesday but men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty pulled out of the tournament due to injury. Two-time Olympic medalist and former world champion Sindhu defeated Switzerland’s Jenjira Stedelmann 21-10 21-4. World Championship silver medalist Srikanth bowed out in his round of 32 match after going down 21-11 25-27 23-21 to Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammasin.

After winning the historic Swiss Open title, the Indian pair of Satwik and Chirag will face the Japanese pair of Ayato Endo and Yuta Takei. The Indian pair pulled out of the tournament after Satwik injured his knee. The Indian pair trailed 9-11 at the break in the first game. Meanwhile, Aakarshi Kashyap upset sixth seed Michelle Li of Canada 12-21 21-15 21-18 in her first round match. Women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, however, suffered a first round defeat against Japan’s Rina Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto. In another men’s singles match, B Sai Praneeth defeated John Lauda.
