Sirikit Cup: Avni wins title, India finishes best second

Manila. Avani Prashanth on Friday became the first Indian golfer to win the Queen Sirikit Cup, helping the Indian team also register their best performance in the tournament’s 43-year history. Avani, who carded 68, 66 and 70 on the first three days, shot a total of 16-under to finish 10 strokes ahead of New Zealand’s Fiona Tzu, who shot a total of six-under. 16-year-old Avni from Bangalore recently broke into the top 100. Avani, who is ranked 93rd in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, helped India give a tough fight to the Korean team and then settle for the second spot.

Avni produced her career-best performance, with her partner Vidhatri Urs (74-77-72-74) tied-19th and Nishna Patel (80-78-74-75) tied-30th. In the team event, Korea finished first with a total score of 12-under 564. Avni said, “This win was long overdue and I am looking forward to the upcoming results throughout this year. It’s a bit disappointing that I won’t be going to Augusta this year but I hope to play there in 2024. I am very happy with this win and hope to continue with this momentum.
