According to a BMKG press release, the 5.3 magnitude earthquake, whose center was in the sea at a depth of 10 km, about 20 km southwest of North Padang Lawas, was a shallow earthquake.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a horizontal movement mechanism.

Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono , said the 5.3 magnitude earthquake was preceded by an opening earthquake of 3.4 magnitude.

The vibrations of the main earthquake were felt on the V MMI scale in the Aek Godang area in North Padang Lawas Regency, Batang Toru in South Tapanuli Regency, and Padang Sidempuan City.

On the MMI V scale, the vibrations were felt by almost all residents and caused pottery to break, objects to bounce, and pillars and large items to appear to sway.

The BMKG modeling results show that the earthquake in the southwest of North Padang Lawas does not have the potential for a tsunami.

BMKG until Wednesday at 13.00 WIB detected an aftershock occurred at 12.31 WIB with a magnitude of 3.1 after the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 at 12.19 WIB.
