WTC Final 2023: India’s batting completely flopped, Australia got 173 runs lead

A seventh-wicket partnership between Ajinkya Rahane and Shardul Thakur saved India some degree of shame on the third day. The pair added 109 runs from 145 balls. However, the stand did not last long in the second session as Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 89 by Pat Cummins. Thakur fought back and scored a half-century of 51 runs. India were all out for 296 and Australia took a first innings lead of 173 runs. Captain Pat Cummins took three wickets for Australia while Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc took two wickets each.

Rahane, who returned to the team after almost 18 months, batted intelligently, sent bad balls across the boundary line and also stole runs by running. India started the day at 151 for five and their only blow in the first session came in the form of Shrikar Bharat (five runs). Bharat became the second victim of Scott Boland on the second ball of the day without adding to his score of the previous day. Rahane and Shardul then batted with strong spirit. Shardul was injured twice by Cummins in the 42nd over of the Indian innings. Both times the ball hit his right hand and the team physio had to come on the field.
