Sreeja, Sharath Kamal, Manika qualify for WTTC final

Birmingham Commonwealth Games mixed doubles gold medalist Sreeja Akula, ace table tennis players Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra have qualified for the Durban World Table Tennis Championship Finals to be held in May. At the same time, the world’s number 47 player Sharath Kamal beat Ahmadian Amin of Iran by 13. 11, 11. 3, 10. 12, 11. Beaten by 7

Ranked 35th in the world, Manika defeated Zhu Chengzhu of Hong Kong by 13. 11, 11. 9, 11. 6, 11. beat by 8. Manika and G Sathiyan beat Japan’s Hiroto Shinozuka and Miyu 11-1 in the mixed doubles. 9, 12. 10, 11. 7, 5. 11, 11. beat by 7. Sathiyan and Sharath Kamal beat Qatar’s Mohammad Abdul Wahab and Khaleel Al Mohammadi by 11. 5, 11. 0, 119, 11. Made it to the finals by defeating 8. G Sathiyan could not make it to the finals in singles but he can get entry on the basis of world ranking.

Reet Rishya and Sreeja also secured a berth in the last four but Reet’s play is doubtful as she could not make it to the singles. Manika and Sharath Kamal can also qualify on the basis of world rankings. Eight quotas were to be awarded in mixed doubles with 25 in men’s singles, 28 in women’s singles, 14 in men’s doubles and 12 in women’s doubles through the Asian WTTC. Only four male and four female players from each country will get admission.
