Story of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council

Leaders are opportunists. Governments are also opportunistic. But leaders, parties and governments do opportunistic things only by protecting the eyes of the people. The Jagan Mohan Reddy government of Andhra Pradesh has broken the whole definition of opportunism. Two and a half years ago in 2019, when the YSR Congress government was formed with a thumping majority under the leadership of Jagan Mohan Reddy, the YSR Congress had few members in the Legislative Council and the majority belonged to Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP. So, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government passed a resolution from the assembly and recommended the dissolution of the Legislative Council.

Jagan Sarkar said that huge unnecessary expenditure is being incurred on the Legislative Council, so it should be abolished. At that time because the Legislative Council used to obstruct the bills and proposals of the government, so Jagan passed the resolution to abolish it. But after several elections held in two years, Jagan’s party has got a majority in the Legislative Council. As soon as the majority has been achieved, the state government has passed a new resolution from the assembly saying that the Legislative Council should be retained. Incidentally, the Central Government did not take any initiative on the old resolution of the State Assembly. So Jagan Mohan Reddy has been able to save his majority Legislative Council. Significantly, many more states have sent a proposal to the Center to form a Legislative Council, but the Center is not considering it.
