Suryakumar ready to play Test, Lyon will miss Starc’s footprints: Tendulkar

Batting great Sachin Tendulkar believes Test cricket is indeed a different game but said on Wednesday that Suryakumar Yadav is all set to play in the traditional format because of his skill and ability to think out of the box. In an interview to PTI, Tendulkar spoke about the importance of the match-up between the two players, the brilliance of Ravichandran Ashwin and the importance of Cheteshwar Pujara, who prepares to play his 99th Test in Jamtha from Thursday.

Tendulkar said, “From playing T20s and ODIs to now making it to the Test team, he (Suryakumar Yadav) has made an incomparable mark across the world. Whoever keeps an eye on Suryakumar’s game, they are convinced of his ability and way of thinking. “He said,” But Test cricket is a different game. Suryakumar looks all set to play Test cricket. A player of his caliber should be considered along with Lokesh Rahul and Shubman Gill. All three are capable players and I do not want to pass judgment here but all three are capable of making a place in the team.

Tendulkar, who is the highest run-scorer in Test cricket, did not want to get into the debate about the best playing XI but said that consistency is the key to retain his place in the team. “I don’t want to get into team composition and all that. But if we talk about the recent times, Shubman Gill has been in good form and Rahul hasn’t been able to contribute but that’s life. You go through these ups and downs. Both of them are excellent players and will have to keep scoring runs to retain their place in the team.

Talking about India’s number one batsman Virat Kohli and his return to form in limited overs cricket, Tendulkar said it is a good sign for the team ahead of the Test series against Australia. “I really liked seeing the way he played in the last few months, dominant, sure of what he wanted to do,” he said. Would like to because it will be a great match between two great players.

Tendulkar said, “World cricket needs this kind of rivalry. It is important to have a rivalry like this and remember when Australia came in 1998 it was called Warne vs Tendulkar and I had to remind everyone that it was not Warne vs Tendulkar but Australia vs India. But everyone likes to see such rivalry.” Pujara is set to achieve the milestone of 100 Tests during the second match of the series at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in New Delhi.

Pujara, who scored over 7000 Test runs in 98 matches, is expected to trouble the Australian bowlers. Tendulkar, the only cricketer to play 200 Tests, said, “I think Pujara’s achievements have not been recognized enough and his importance in the team has not been recognized enough.” Australia will certainly miss Mitchell Starc but Tendulkar feels the left-arm seamer’s absence will take a toll on him. Spinner Lyon’s impact may be less.

Starc, who bowls around the wicket (to left-handed batsmen over the wicket), often creates his footprints on the pitch and this becomes a problem for right-handed batsmen (when a spinner bowls and his feet takes advantage of the mark). “Lyon is a world-class bowler and he becomes more effective when Starc plays as the right-handed batsman’s foot prints outside the off-stump,” Tendulkar said. These things are very important in the match.

Traditionally spinners are effective when the ball is old but according to Tendulkar in Ravichandran Ashwin’s case, the coolness in the morning air and presence of moisture in the pitch could make them crucial in the first hour itself. Tendulkar said, “I think he is just one wicket away from 450 wickets. Ashwin is a world class bowler and he has been performing brilliantly over the years. The variety that he has is really special and he is not afraid to try things. He wants to make the situation uncomfortable for the batsmen and that is how it should be.

Tendulkar believes Jadeja’s presence in the playing XI provides the necessary balance and he is capable of batting regularly at number six in Test cricket. He said, “Jadeja is tremendous as a package. If you look at the last few seasons, he has improved his batting and for me he is good enough to bat at number six and he has played very important innings for India. In bowling too, he recently played a first-class match and took wickets (seven wickets against Tamil Nadu). Unfortunately he got injured (knee) and players like him will overcome challenges.

While everyone is talking about the impact of spinners, Tendulkar said that reverse swing will also be important. He said, “The fast bowlers will be important in the first hour of every morning and the spinners too because the pitch will help in the morning. I remember I played a match in Nagpur where the spinners dominated the morning session. Some balls used to go straight and some used to turn very fast. It used to be difficult for the batsmen to predict which ball would turn and which would come straight. Reverse swing will also be important in this series.” The challenge of being an international cricketer is to adjust to different types of pitches and Tendulkar feels that when a team comes to India, they should be well aware that the pitch will turn. .
