Suryakumar said T20 vice-captaincy is not an extra burden

India’s new T20 sensation Suryakumar Yadav on Wednesday said that becoming the vice-captain of the national team is like a dream but he will not take it as an extra burden and will continue to play his natural game. The Indian selectors have made a lot of changes in the limited overs team. Hardik Pandya has been handed the captaincy of the T20 team for the series against Sri Lanka, starting January 3 next year in Mumbai, while Suryakumar has been made his vice-captain.

Senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have not been given a place in the T20 team. Suryakumar told reporters after the end of the second day’s play of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra, “I did not expect this (vice-captaincy). All I can say is that it’s a reward for the way I batted this year. It feels really good and I am looking forward to take up this responsibility.

When his father sent the team list to Suryakumar, for once he could not believe that he had been made the vice-captain of the team. He said, “I came to know from my father who is active on social media. He sent me the team list along with a brief message, don’t take any pressure and just enjoy your batting.” Suryakumar said, “For a few moments I closed my eyes and asked myself Is this a dream It’s a great feeling.
