Swiss Open: Sen out in first round, Srikanth and Manjunath in next round

Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen’s poor run of form continued as he made a first-round exit from the Swiss Open badminton tournament while senior compatriot Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the next round of the BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament here on Wednesday. Srikanth, the 2021 World Championship silver medallist, had a hard time getting past China’s Weng Hong Yang 21-16 15-21 21-18 and will now take on Hong Kong’s Cheuk Yiu Lee, who beat world No. Khiladi Sen’s challenge ended.

Eighth seed Sen crashed out of the men’s singles event after losing 18-21 11-21. But Mithun Manjunath made it to the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals with a straight game 21-8 21-17 win over Netherlands’ Joran Queeckel. He will now face qualifier Chia Hao Li of Chinese Taipei. In women’s doubles, the pair of Sikki Reddy and Aarthi Sara Sunil also bowed out after losing in the first round. India’s second seeded men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Malaysia’s Jin Yuan Boon and Tien Si Wong 21-15 21-18 to book a place in the pre-quarterfinals.
