farmer on kejriwal model

It is noteworthy that neither the purpose of Anna-Kejriwal movement was fulfilled, nor the farmers movement has been completely successful. In such a situation, following the Arvind Kejriwal model of farmer leaders will once again break the trust of the people in the movements, it can be easily guessed.

Early and partial success of the recent farmers’ movement, Haryana’s prominent leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni announced the formation of a political party. After that 22 factions of Punjab, who were part of this movement, not only announced to form a party under the name Samyukta Samaj Morcha, but also announced that their party would contest the next assembly elections. Now the United Kisan Morcha, which has been running the farmers’ movement for more than a year, has said that in its January 15 meeting, it will decide whether farmers’ organizations who have entered politics can remain a part of it. The declared policy of the United Kisan Front is that it does not allow political parties to use their platform.

Under this policy, the logical step would be to leave the organizations involved in electoral politics out of the United Front. This meant that the peasant movement would be divided – or rather it has happened. This situation is when many of the major demands of the farmers’ movement have not been accepted. The most prominent among them is the demand for legislation to guarantee the minimum support price, on which the government has agreed to form a committee for the time being. Now if the government rejects the rest of the demands of the farmers’ movement, then it is clear that the farmers’ movement will not be able to agitate again with its old strength. In fact, taking these signals, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has indicated to bring the repealed agricultural laws again in the future, (though he later clarified that he did not mean that). So what is the conclusion of this whole incident? Wouldn’t the stand of peasant leaders like Chaduni and Balbir Singh Rajewal further deepen the notion that mass movement is actually a platform for some leaders to throw themselves into politics? This model was reaffirmed by Arvind Kejriwal after the alleged anti-corruption movement of 2011. Now Chaduni and Rajewal are also seen following them. It is worth mentioning that neither the purpose of Anna-Kejriwal movement was fulfilled, nor the peasant movement has been completely successful. In such a situation, following the Arvind Kejriwal model of farmer leaders will once again break the trust of the people in the movements, it can be easily guessed.
