We haven’t won ICC tournament for nine years, this is on players’ minds: Rohit Sharma

With the Indian team starting their T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan on Sunday, skipper Rohit Sharma has in mind to end the nine-year drought of the ICC (International Cricket Council) title with tackling the challenge of this ‘high-profile’ match. It will be a matter of Rohit believes that pressure is a part of everyone’s life and he considers the match against Pakistan as a challenge rather than pressure. The Indian team achieved its previous success in ICC tournaments in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

At that time Rohit started proving himself as an opener in international cricket. Rohit said, “I don’t want to use the word pressure because pressure is always there. It’s never gonna change. I want to take it as a challenge. This Pakistan team is very challenging. All the Pakistani teams I have played in from 2007 to 2022 have been a good team. Of course, it is in the mind of our players, but more important than thinking about it is that we do what is in our hands. If you think about it too much, I think you will not be able to pay attention to the present. It is therefore important to focus on the present.

Rohit also said that the Indian team plays very little cricket against Pakistan, so not much is known about the mindset of the players of the Babar Azam-led team. Rohit said, “It is good that we got a chance to play against him twice in the Asia Cup. If it were not so, we would not know anything about them. It is very difficult to guess what kind of mentality they play with because of less play.

Like his former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Rohit said that the team will win this match which team plays well on the match day. The Indian captain said, “You have to prepare well on that particular day and come with a mindset that how can we beat the opposition team. We want to keep it really simple because overthinking leads to confusion and adds pressure.
