Government gives official recognition to e-sports

By giving official recognition to e-sports, the Central Government on Tuesday included it in the major sports disciplines of the country. President Draupadi Murmu, using the powers given in provision 3 of Article 77 of the Constitution, changed the rules related to e-sports and asked the Ministry of Information Technology and Electronics and Sports to include e-sports in multi-sport events. Ever since the inclusion of e-sports as a demonstration sport in the Jakarta Asian Games 2018, there has been a growing demand to make it a part of the multi-sport event.

After the Presidential notification (issued on December 23), the IT Ministry will be the nodal agency on online gaming related issues and the Sports Ministry will have to include it in its subjects. The International Olympic Committee is also promoting e-sports and in this exercise, the first Olympic e-sports week will be celebrated in Singapore in June next year. The Indian Dota 2 team won the bronze medal by defeating New Zealand in the first Commonwealth eSports Championship held in Birmingham in August. Next year’s Asian Games in China will see the debut of e-sports.
