President Ram Nath Kovind said on Monday that it is important for India and the European Union (EU) to strengthen economic ties as well as cooperate in strategic and geopolitically important areas such as the Indo-Pacific region. In his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Kovind said the EU will continue to be an important partner to achieve India’s high ambitions in areas such as climate action, clean energy, sustainable development, digital connectivity and research and innovation. Welcoming Leyen to India, the President said that India and the European Union are the two most vibrant democracies, the largest free market economies and pluralistic societies.

Leyen had reached Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday to meet Kovind. During this, the President said that India and the EU share a common view on many regional and global issues, including a commitment to promote an international rules-based order based on improved effective multilateralism. A statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said that the strategic partnership between India and the EU is one of the most important ties for the coming decade and strengthening this relationship is a priority not only for India, but also for the European Union. . On trade and investment between India and the EU, Kovind said that the European Union is India’s largest trading partner and one of the most important sources of foreign direct investment. He said that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement will unleash the full potential of India-EU economic ties. It is important for countries to deepen their economic engagement.

He said that apart from boosting economic ties, it is necessary for India and the European Union to cooperate in strategic and geopolitically important areas such as the Indo-Pacific. Kovind said, “We look forward to the participation of the European Union and its member states in initiatives related to the Indo-Pacific. India believes that a more ‘Strategic EU’ presence in the Indo-Pacific will contribute to the stability of the region.” In a tweet, Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “President of the European Commission, Leyen, called on Kovind.
