Ladakh sets Guinness world record by running half marathon on frozen lake
Leh / Jammu. The Union Territory of Ladakh created history by successfully organizing its first-ever 21 km race in sub-zero temperatures at the 13,862 feet high Pengog Lake. It was recorded in the Guinness World Records as the half marathon on the world’s highest frozen lake. Spread over 700 square kilometers on the border of India and China, the temperature of Pengog Lake during winter is minus 30 degree Celsius, due to which the salt water lake freezes with ice.
Leh District Development Commissioner Shrikant Balasaheb Suse said that the four-hour long marathon started from Lukung on Monday and ended at Maan village. There was no report of injury to any of the 75 participants who took part in it. It was organized by the name of ‘Last Run’ to remind people about climate change and the need to save the Himalayas.
The marathon was organized by Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in association with Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Department of Tourism and Ladakh and Leh District Administration. “The first Pangong Frozen Lake Half Marathon is now officially entered in the Guinness Book of World Records,” Susey said.
