Nottingham. Top seed Maria Sakkari and former champion Donna Vekich suffered upsets in the last 16 of the Nottingham Open. Sakkari was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by Alize Cornet, while 2017 champion Vekich went down 6-4, 6-1 to Viktorija Golubic. Lin Zhou, another seeded player, also faced defeat in this tournament, which is being linked to the preparations for Wimbledon.

Magdalena Fech defeated eighth seed 6-2, 6-4. Britain’s Heather Watson gave home fans a chance to celebrate as she beat Tatyana Maria 6-4, 6-4. She will challenge Golubich in the quarterfinals.
