The Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) is a set of information on Brazilian families in poverty and extreme poverty.
This information is used by the Federal Government, States and municipalities to implement public policies capable of improving the lives of these families. Several social programs use data from CadÚnico, such as Bolsa Família , emergency aid , discounts on the federal government’s electricity tariff, or such as vale-gás and São Paulo Acolhe (income distribution programs in the State of São Paulo).

WHO CAN REGISTER FOR CADÚNICO?
Families or people who live alone can register if:
– adding the salary of all family members and dividing by the number of family members, the amount is up to R$550 (half of the minimum wage) per month;
– the sum of salaries of all family members is up to R$ 3,300 (three times the minimum wage); or
– are homeless, whether a homeless person or a homeless family; or
It may be that you are not in any of these situations, but you need to register to receive a service that requires it. If this is your case, you can also register.
WHAT INFORMATION IS CONTAINED IN CADÚNICO?
The CadÚnico records information such as: household characteristics, identification of each person, education, work status and income, among others.
HOW TO REGISTER IN CADÚNICO?
Step 1: Search for a CRAS or Cadastro Único post
If the family is not registered in the Cadastro Único, they must check where the Cadastro Único is made in the city where they live. City halls normally register at the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) or at a service post of the Cadastro Único and the Bolsa Família Program.
At CRAS, it will be possible to find out about where the registration is done, if the CRAS itself does not carry out the interview. There are cases where it is necessary to schedule the service through a call center. Anyway, through the CRAS the citizen will know what steps he should take to make his interview.
Step 2: Organize the necessary documentation
The person who will register the family must be at least 16 years old, have a CPF or Electoral Title, and must preferably be a woman. This person, for the Cadastro Único, is called the Responsible Family.
This person must take their CPF or Voter’s Title and also present at least one document for each person in the family, among the following:
- Birth certificate;
- Wedding certificate;
- CPF;
– Identity Card – RG;
– Work Card;
– Voter Title
– Administrative Registry of Indigenous Birth (RANI) – only if the person is indigenous.
Those responsible for indigenous or quilombola families do not need to present their CPF or Voter’s Title if they do not have one, but they must bring another identification document among those listed above.
People without documentation or without civil registration can enroll in the Cadastro Único, but they will not be able to access social programs until they have the necessary documentation.
Step 3: Conduct the registration interview
When seeking assistance from the Cadastro Único, either at CRAS or at a post in the Cadastro Único, the most important step that the Family Responsible must perform is the interview with the Cadastro Único.
A social interviewer, who is a City Hall employee, will ask questions about various aspects of the family’s reality: who is part of the family, household characteristics, expenses, whether there are people with disabilities in the family, educational level of the members, work characteristics and remuneration of family members and whether the family is indigenous, quilombola, etc.

This interview can be registered in a specific paper form or in the Cadastro Único System, directly on the computer. In any of these situations, the interviewer must request the signature of the Responsible Parent on the completed or printed form and provide proof of registration.
Step 4: Confirmation of registration: NIS assignment
When entering family data in the Single Registry System for the first time, the system will check to see if the family members already have a NIS, and if not, they will be assigned a NIS. The NIS is the Social Identification Number. This process can take up to 48 hours and is intended to ensure that each registered person is unique. Only people who are NIS assigned can participate in social programs.
Important: after registering the family, it is important to keep the data up to date. Whenever something changes in the family, such as the birth of a child, change of house or job, or when someone no longer lives in the household, the family responsible must seek the CRAS and update the family’s data.
