Delhi beat Manipur with brilliant use of ‘Impact Player’

Delhi made excellent use of the ‘Impact Player’ option in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy to beat Manipur by 71 runs in a Group B match here on Tuesday. Opener Hiten Dalal scored 47 runs in 27 balls as Delhi made 167 for seven. The team then brought in off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen in place of Dalal, who took two wickets in a span of three overs to reduce Manipur’s innings to 96 runs.

Under the ‘Impact Player’ rule, any team can replace one of the players of the XI in the middle of the match by adding any other player to the team. Shokin made his IPL debut with Mumbai Indians earlier this year. After making his mark as a first-class cricketer, India’s Under-19 World Cup winning captain Yash Dhul made his 23-ball 24 debut in the senior T20 tournament. He hit a six and a four.

Ayush Badoni, who batted vigorously for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022, played an important innings of 20 runs in 15 balls. Himmat Singh scored an unbeaten 25 off seven balls with six fours. Fast bowler Mayank Yadav impressed with his bowling in the presence of Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini, who have played 100 Tests for India. He took two wickets for 23 runs in four overs. Ishant took one wicket for 17 runs in three overs. Delhi had failed to reach the knockout stage of all three domestic tournaments last season.

The team, however, is hoping for a good performance this time under the supervision of new captain Nitish Rana and head coach Abhay Sharma. This time too, however, things will not be easy for them as Group B has strong teams from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. In other Group B matches, Goa beat Tripura by five wickets while Uttar Pradesh beat Puducherry by 10 wickets by VJD system.
