Hurissa will be the center of attraction in Mumbai Marathon

Defending men’s champion Derara Hurissa of Ethiopia will be the center of attraction at the Tata Mumbai Marathon to be held here on January 15. The Gold Label road race of World Athletics is returning after a break of two years due to the pandemic. Hurisa’s road will not be easy this time as the personal best of a dozen runners taking part in the event is less than two hours eight minutes and nine seconds, the course record set by the Ethiopian runner in 2020. The personal bests of the 12 male and seven female runners competing here were better than the course record, making the $450,000 prize race extremely competitive.

In this top competition of Asia, more than 55 thousand amateur runners will present the challenge in six categories. Each winner in the Elite Men’s and Elite Women’s categories will receive $45,000, while breaking the course record will fetch an additional $15,000. “I am ready for the challenge and have my eyes set on the title,” Hurissa said. In the men’s section, Hurissa will face tough competition from compatriots Ayele Abshero and Hayley Lemy, besides Philimon Rono of Kenya. Abshero was the runner-up here in 2020, 11 seconds behind Hurisa. Seven runners in the elite women’s category had a personal best bettering the course record of 2h 24m 33s set by Valentine Kipketer in 2013. Dera Dida and Rahma Tusa of Ethiopia and Sharon Cherop of Kenya will be among the title contenders.
