Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended best wishes to all the teams for the Hockey World Cup starting in Odisha from January 13 and expressed hope that this global event will not only strengthen the sporting spirit but also make hockey more popular. Ahead of the opening ceremony of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, Modi said in a tweet, “With the 2023 Hockey World Cup starting in Odisha, my best wishes to all the participating teams.” May this tournament further strengthen the spirit of sportsmanship and popularize the beautiful game of hockey. India is proud to host this tournament.

The opening ceremony has been organized at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack this evening. Men’s Hockey World Cup matches will be played from January 13 to January 29. India’s first match is to be played against Spain on January 13 at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. Two days later, India will face England at the same ground. Odisha is hosting the Men’s Hockey World Cup for the second time in a row. The first such event was organized in 2018. This will be the fourth time that India is hosting this prestigious tournament.
