Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, playing in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since the birth of a child in October, defeated ninth seed Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 7-6 to reach the last eight of women’s singles. Svitolina did not shake hands with her Russian opponent after the match and gave a ‘thumbs up’ instead. Svitolina did this because of the ongoing war between the two countries. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Karolina Muchova also made it to the quarterfinals. Pavlyuchenkova beat 28th seed Elise Mertens 3-6, 7-6, 6-3, while Muchova defeated Alina Avanesyan 6-4, 6-4.

American tennis player Coco Gauff recovered from a knee injury suffered during the first set to beat Anna Karolina Schmidlova 7-5, 6-2 on Monday to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the third time in a row. Gauff was leading 5-2 in the first set but 100th-ranked Schmidlova made a stunning comeback to level the score at 5-5. Gauff then tripped and fell, dislocating her right knee. He returned to the match with a bandage and won the set with a strong game. In the second set, Shmidlova looked uncomfortable in front of her. In the women’s category, Ons Jabour and 14th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil also reached the quarterfinals. These two players will face each other in the last eight.
