Women’s T20 World Cup: New Zealand beat Bangladesh by 71 runs

Suzie Bates scored an unbeaten 81 as New Zealand beat Bangladesh women by 71 runs in their ‘Virtual Knockout’ group match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup to keep their tournament hopes alive on Friday. Bates became the first female cricketer to reach 1000 runs in T20 World Cup with this innings. Both the teams needed to win this match to stay in the tournament. New Zealand opened their account in the points table with their first win in three matches.

Batting after winning the toss, New Zealand scored a mammoth 189 for the loss of three wickets in a 61-ball innings studded with seven fours and a six. Chasing this target, the Bangladesh team could only score 118 runs in 20 overs after losing eight wickets. This is his third defeat in three matches. Murshida Khatoon top-scored for Bangladesh with 30 runs. For New Zealand, Eden Carson took three wickets while Hannah Rowe took two wickets before Bates, Bernadine Bezuidenhout and Maddy Green (not out) made useful contributions of 44-44 runs. Fahima Khan took two wickets and Shorna Akhtar took one wicket for Bangladesh.
