Top medal winning wrestlers open front against WFI, Bajrang Punia-Sakshi Malik said the federation cannot behave like slaves

Top wrestlers of the country, including Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia and World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, are on strike at Jantar Mantar against Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Taking an unprecedented step, all the players turned to Jantar Mantar on January 18 and raised their voice against the federation.

The wrestlers have put forth their demands on Twitter. Bajrang Punia tweeted that the player works hard to get the medal for the country but the Federation has done nothing but let us down. Players are being harassed by imposing any law they want. The job of the Federation is to support the players, take care of their sporting needs. If there is a problem, it has to be solved. What to do if the federation itself creates the problem? We have to fight now, we will not back down.

Bajrang, Vinesh, Rio Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, World Championship medalist Sarita Mor, Sangeeta Phogat, Satyawart Malik, Jitendra Kinha and Commonwealth Games medalist Sumit Malik are among the 30 wrestlers sitting on the dharna at Jantar Mantar. Bajrang said that our fight is not against the government or the Sports Authority of India. We are against WFI. We will give its details today. This is now a cross-border battle. Bajrang’s support staff, including his coach Sujit Mann and physio Anand Dubey, are also on strike. Another wrestler said that dictatorship will not work.

On the other hand, Vinesh Phogat tweeted that the player wants self-respect and prepares with full vigor for the Olympics and big games, but if the federation does not support him, the morale breaks down. But now we will not bow down. Will fight for our rights.

Let us inform that Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, President of Wrestling Federation of India, is the WFI President since 2011 and was elected for the third consecutive time in February 2019. Anshu Malik, Sangeeta Phogat and other wrestlers have also tagged the PMO, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah by tweeting the hashtag Boycott WFI President.

Federation’s assistant secretary met the protesting wrestlers
After the demonstration of wrestlers against the federation, Vinod Tomar, assistant secretary of Wrestling Federation of India, came to meet the protesting wrestlers. He said that once he comes to the Federation, all the issues will be sorted out. They haven’t told me yet what is the matter. No such issue has been raised with me or the Federation so far. He said he didn’t know what it was about. From the letter written to the WFI president, it was learned that some wrestlers are sitting in protest.
