Wolfsburg’s mistake : Opponent objects

Germany’s Bundesliga club Wolfsburg is threatened with losing the cup against a reginal league club. A mistake could result in total embarrassment.

Coach Mark van Bommel’s team changed six instead of the allowed five players at 3-1 after extra time. After the substitution error of the troops of ÖFB legionnaire Xaver Schlager, regional league team Preussen Münster, as expected, filed an objection against the valuation of the cup opening game. The club announced on Monday after extensive discussions.

“We stood up to a highly favored Champions League participant in a thrilling and passionate cup game and, with the support of our fans, forced VfL Wolfsburg into overtime. With the inadmissible change, our guest had a decisive influence on the game to our disadvantage Now we have a responsibility to those who support and remain loyal to this club, which, like many others, is facing major economic challenges, “said Münster’s sports director Peter Niemeyer.

In the DFB implementation regulations for cup games it says: “During the game five players may be exchanged. Any additional substitution in games with overtime is not permitted.” Wolfsburg brought goalscorers Brekalo, Maximilian Arnold and Kevin Mbabu in the regular season.
