Rosario | The Jockey Club allows women to be full members after 121 years – MisionesOnline

After 121 years, women will now be able to join the Jockey Club Rosario, one of the most traditional institutions linked to the history of the city of Santa Fe, as full members and not just as adherents.

In an assembly in which women did not participate, since despite being part of the social and institutional life of the entity for more than a century they did not enjoy the same political rights as men, it was approved that the women of the Jockey Club stop being “adherents” and become “full members”.

This is how the president of the entity, Charles Roberts, informed Télam this afternoon: “This is putting the club in the right place and at the right times.”

“The initiative arose in 2015, when we started working with a commission in which I was vice president and we presented a 10-point program to improve the statute” Charles Roberts-President of the Jockey Club of Rosario.

The Jockey Club defined, with 99% of the votes in favor, none against and 1% abstentions, the approval of the new statutes that will give women access to full rights.

«I am very happy about this step, it is something that makes us proud because it is what corresponds, which is to adapt the statute of the club because it is what social life demands of you, where you, I and we all have the same rights between men and women ”, declared Roberts, the president of the institution, who has a 27-year-old daughter who will carry out the process to go from adherent to full member.

In this sense, Charles confided that “yesterday I went to see a soccer match of veteran girls of the club, between Rosario Central and Newell’s, among which was Noel, the daughter of (former player and former Newell’s coach) Tata Martino. They applauded me and thanked me for this measure, but I told them that we did not do more than what was due, regardless of whether or not they join the club later.

«There were many votes in favor and there were no votes against, only some abstentions» Charles Roberts-President of the Jockey Club of Rosario

Asked about the origin of the movement that achieved the inclusion of women with the right to be a full member, Roberts recalled that “it arose in 2015, when we started working with a commission in which I was vice president and we presented a 10-point program to improve the statute and a commission of former presidents and lawyers was formed, together with the manager and the administrator, who presented a project in 2016 ».

Regarding the extensive six-year process to include women, the club’s head acknowledged that “there were many discussions because there were some who wanted to open the club to everyone and others who did not want to open it to anyone. There were many votes in favor and there were no votes against, only some abstentions.

Roberts warned that “there are statutes from 1900 and the realities of families and society have varied a lot, and they cannot continue to be left out of institutional reality.”

For her part, Carla López, deputy secretary of the Banco Santa Fe Club and member of the Gender Board of the Rosario Club Network, told the newspaper La Capital that “we must advance in these changes and leave behind situations like these, which at this point in history they continue to curtail the possibility of social and political participation of women and dissidents in sports entities ”.

“We must advance in these changes and leave behind situations like these, which at this point in history continue to curtail the possibility of social and political participation of women and dissidents in sports entities” Carla López-prosecretary of the Banco Santa Fe Club and member of the Gender Table of the Red de Clubes de Rosario.

The Jockey Club of Rosario, founded in 1900, now has about 14,000 people who participate in the club’s spaces but only has 5,000 active members (men). Being registered as full members in the institution will give women – from now on – political rights within the club, in addition to the possibility of participation in leadership spaces and even reaching the presidency.

The Jockey Club created its association on September 18, 1900, in order to improve the horse breed at the racetrack, located in Parque Independencia. In 1916, due to the rise of economic and social growth, the headquarters was built that became the cultural heritage of the city of Rosario, located in Maipú and Córdoba, a place where poets, writers, athletes and politicians from Argentina and the world traveled. .

In 1920, the Jockey Club acquired the first hectares in Fisherton to give rise to what is now the Country, which grew over the years in size, number of members and sporting activities.
