Focus on taking cricket beyond Guwahati, says new ACA president

Assam Cricket Association (ACA) president Taranga Gogoi said the focus of the new committee would be to take the game beyond Guwahati to smaller towns. The new committee headed by Gogoi took charge on Sunday. He said that his committee would focus more on providing infrastructure and coaching facilities. After taking over as ACA president, Gogoi told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “We will ensure that cricket is not confined to Guwahati only.” Gogoi belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party and is a first time MLA from Naharkatiya constituency. He stressed on the importance of proper infrastructure and coaching facilities for the development of the game.

He said, “Our predecessor committee has started a lot of infrastructure development works across the state. Along with completing them, we are also thinking of starting new works. We will also ensure that adequate coaching and other facilities are available for our cricketers.” He also said that the ACA will ask the Indian Cricket Board to allot more international matches to Guwahati, including the 2023 World Cup in India. Cup matches are also included.

Five others, including Gogoi, were declared elected unopposed to the apex council of the ACA on Sunday. Rajdeep Ojha will be the new Vice President of ACA, while Tridib Konwar will be the Secretary. Other members of the Apex Council are Rajinder Singh (Joint Secretary), Chiranjit Langthasa (Treasurer) and Anupam Deka (Member, Apex Council). In this, two players (members) will be nominated by the ‘Indian Cricketers’ Association’ and one member from the Accountant General’s Office of Assam. The term of the nine-member council is three years.
